An interdisciplinary stage production commissioned by the Arvo Pärt Days festival. Created in collaboration with Irish actor Paul Curley, Irish musician Seán Mac Erlaine and Estonian musician Ahto Abner.
Creating Gods is an interdisciplinary stage show based on Fernando Pessoa’s works (mostly texts published under Alberto Caeiro’s heteronym) and Mingo Rajandi’s conceptual musical work.
Commissioned for the Arvo Pärt Days festival in 2018, by the artistic director Tõnu Kaljuste, Creating Gods narrates Alberto Caeiro’s mystical story of menino Jesus through poetry, music, light design, movement and other dramatic elements.
The work ponders on the essence of human being, always looking for truth and never finding it, and questions the values of today in the mirror of eternity. While reflecting on rather serious matters such as god, religion, death, war, morality etc, it is still performed without heaviness. The simple yet complex story being told through a little child’s eyes draws attention to the beauty of small things and points out the ridiculous concepts of adult life with humorous parallels.
It is performed by three musicians and an actor who are all equally engaged in delivering the story through music, movement and word.
Minimalistic scenography is based on a floor cover, light design, masks and costumes only.
It is an Estonian – Irish collaboration and is performed in English.
Originally created for performing in a sacral building not currently used for religious practice, it can, due to its flexible format, be easily staged in different ambients.
